A washing machine and a dryer are two of the larger appliances that you may need to move during a relocation. They are often crammed into a tiny laundry room, and their large size presents a challenge as you try to maneuver them out the door and onto a moving truck. While moving a washing machine and a dryer is a strenuous, difficult task to complete, it is feasible with the right approach. These steps will guide you through the process.

Gather Supplies and Equipment

The dimensions and weight of a washing machine and a dryer make them almost impossible to move without a dolly. Many people also need the assistance of another person even with a dolly. When you rent a dolly from a local moving company, ensure that you get one that is specifically made for appliances.

You also need to plan for the protection of the washing machine and dryer. For example, you may use moving blankets that are specifically designed for this purpose.

Disconnect the Appliances

Once you have all of the supplies and equipment available, you can begin the process of relocating the washer and dryer. You will need to disconnect the appliances from the wall. This requires you to pull the appliances away from the wall far enough so that you can access the electrical cord, water hose, and dryer vent tube. You may also have a gas line that must be disconnected. Remember to turn the valves for the water and gas lines to the off position before disconnecting these hoses.

You may place the hoses inside the washing machine and dryer so that they do not get in the way. The electrical cord may be taped to the back of the appliance so that it is out of the way.

Wrap Your Appliances

In most cases, you will need to maneuver the washing machine and dryer through tight hallways and doorways. There is a good chance that you will bang these appliances against a door, doorframe or wall. By doing so, you may damage your home and your appliances.

To avoid this type of damage, wrap your appliances securely with moving blankets. You can then load the appliances onto the dolly, and secure the dolly’s belt around the appliance and blankets.

Transport the Appliances Carefully

You may need help tilting a loaded appliance dolly backward. A helper may also walk in front of you and the loaded dolly to guide you through the home and onto the moving truck’s ramp. You may be inclined to move quickly once the appliances are on the dolly, but it is best to move slowly and carefully. In addition to the risk of the appliances banging against a wall or door frame, there is also a possibility of the appliance shifting or slipping off of the dolly.

Once you get to your new home and are ready to unload the truck, you need to follow these instructions in reverse order. These two appliances may each take several minutes to load and unload, so be patient with the process.
